Yes, You Should Deck Your Dorms With Boughs Of Holly

It’s possible to still get in the Christmas spirit, it’s just a little more unorthodox and definitely looks like it was done by a broke, tight-budgeted college student.

At home, my mother puts up the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving. I help, of course.

Together, we take out all of our beautiful, glittery ornaments and strings of lights and turn a plastic tree wanna-be into one of the most quintessential items of Christmas cheer. It was always set up in the family room, opposite the couch, and we had the lights turned on all day.

Whenever you were in the family room, the kitchen, or even just walking down the hallway, you would be able to catch a glimpse of the tree and feel as though Christmas was certainly coming.

At college, trees are a fire hazard. Practical, but very reminiscent of Scrooge and all things to kill Christmas cheer. The hallways are grey and bland as always, and Christmas doesn’t feel like it’s happening, let alone less than a month away at times. However, it’s possible to still get in the Christmas spirit, it’s just a little more unorthodox and definitely looks like it was done by a broke, tight-budgeted college student.

My roommate and I had had fairy lights in our room all semester (mostly to avoid turning on our ugly fluorescent lights), so our room could already be considered almost festive. We each ordered some cheap colorful strands from Amazon just to make it a little more festive, and two days later they were here. We also read back through the rulebook, and figured out only real trees were banned as fire hazards, so my roommate, the gem, brought three feet of plastic and set it on top of our microwave.

For three dollars, we bought a roll of wrapping paper and spent an hour or so one afternoon painstakingly taping it in sheets to our door. No longer grey and bland, it not only added more Christmas spirit to our floor as it was visible in the hallway but also added more spirit to our room as we almost always have our door open. Playing Christmas carols over Spotify and working together to do this, it was reminiscent of me and my mom listening to Christmas carols on TV at home while decorating the tree. Not only did it make our door more flashy, but our neighbors, after commenting “What a great idea!” put up a decorated door of their own, with ribbon to boot.

I was also able to use the last bits of our wrapping paper and their wrapping paper to wrap my Secret Santa gift for our floor friend group. Once I was finished, it looked very Christmas-y, albeit a little haphazard in appearance. All in all, just because you’re away at college and missing the traditions you’ve established with your parents, it doesn’t mean that you can’t make traditions of your own and do things to celebrate with your friends. Truthfully, it’s just another one of those things that are going to make college really start to feel like home.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
