I'm here today to talk about an age-old tradition that has personally annoyed me for over a decade now. Christmas in November.
You probably know or are someone who starts celebrating Christmas when the clock hits midnight on November 1st. I am here, not to tell you that it's wrong to do so, but more to show you what you're missing out on.
For a lot of people, the holidays that are observed from November 1st to Christmas, are merely just markers on the way to Saint Nicks' day. I think the saddest thing about Christmas starting so early for some people, is the lack of attention and excitement that comes with those holidays, and how overshadowed they are by the Christmas hype.
Thanksgiving is one of the greatest holidays in my opinion, as far as the basis of food and giving thanks goes. It may have not started on civil terms, but the idea that everyone gets together just to simply enjoy time together is a great concept for a holiday.
Also, let's not overshadow the fact that in America, Christmas is definitely not the only December holiday. Other religions have important holidays that fall this time of year, yet they don't get nearly as much spotlight as the 25th does.
Another thing about Christmas, no matter how overused the argument is, is that some people make it simply too commercial of a holiday.
I like the idea of giving and receiving, but sometimes Christmas can just become this big event of stress, financial and social, that makes the whole holiday lackluster. It's almost expected that people receive things every year, and I think the whole practice of assuming you're guaranteed something can be disheartening if you set your expectations too high.
I'm not saying I hate Christmas, or that I wish it wasn't a holiday at all. I'm not saying I don't enjoy gingerbread houses and getting gifts.
But I am saying that as a society, I think we need to reevaluate what Christmas really means and what we expect from it. I think thas the potential to be so much more.
And I think that people like me, who aren't its biggest fans, could all appreciate it more if it wasn't forced on us for two entire months out of our year. I think the uniqueness and a sacred part about holidays is that they're fleeting, and don't happen every day. Maybe November has a lot more potential than we're giving it.
And maybe if we appreciate that, a lot more people could then appreciate Christmas.
