It is officially December and the Christmas music continues! Although many retail stores have been selling Christmas décor since the beginning of November, the Christmas spirit solely grows.
I personally loved Christmas when I was younger. My mom LOVES to decorate and get in the spirit, which always kept my siblings and I in the spirit too. Also, my parents would take us to Disneyland each year around this time, now you can imagine how magical it must have been.
My mom likes color and you bet our Christmas tree is lighted with all sorts of colorful lights. There are various snowman and Santa Claus décor everywhere, even my bedroom door. We don’t have a tradition of baking Christmas desserts, only Christmas tamales (which are TOO GOOD).
My Mexican family celebrates Christmas on Christmas Eve. Sometimes we wait until midnight to open the presents and sometimes, most of the time, we don’t. We have family over in the evening, eat tamales until we get beyond full, have a few drinks, play music and open presents. On Christmas day we simply eat more tamales and enjoy the desserts our neighbors pass on.
Of course, when I was younger I asked for many gifts; different Barbies or Disney things. As I am getting older and going through what are the most difficult but memorable years, there are certain things I desire more. Some of the best things in life cannot be bought, but can be given:
1. Memories: With family members, friends, colleagues or animals.
2. Adventures: Some of the greatest adventures have taken place on sidewalks, In n Out and stores.
3. Laughs: My friend used to be shy when my sister and I would laugh out loud, now she laughs along with us and its always a great time! Nothing compares to having friends, who although you don’t see each other often, but when you do it is nothing but die hard laughing with a few tears.
4. Time: Your time is so precious, it cannot be replaced.
5. Conversations: Whether at a bar or coffee shop, a conversation can make someone feel better
Heading into Christmas this year I am focused more on giving than receiving. I have two nieces, nephew and younger brother. They don’t necessarily believe in Santa anymore because they know that their tias and grandparents are going to buy them presents. So with them I’ll go toy shopping.
However, for my older family members I don’t know what to give them because they don’t need anything. I don’t need anything. As long as we celebrate together and are able to get together any other day besides Christmas, then it’s all good.
Maybe I am old school or just getting old, but I much rather have dinner with you than have you give me an object.
