Years ago when I first started getting into YouTube, I was all about singers like Tyler Ward, Katy McAllister, and Julia Sheer. One of the most talented YouTubers, however, was definitely Christina Grimmie. I remember buying her first EP, Find Me (2011), as soon as it released on iTunes. Her EP was all that I would play for at least two months straight. She had a raw and natural talent from the beginning.
Tragically, Christina was shot on June 11th, 2016 during a meet and greet with her fans. Christina was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later passed away.
Heroically, Christina's brother, Marcus Grimmie (pictured below), tackled the gunman to the ground before he could harm anyone else -- and thank you for that Marcus! Your selfless actions and love for Christina is remarkable.
Christina first started out on YouTube back in February of ‘09. Christina regularly posted videos that not only showed her talent, but also her personality. She was never afraid to be herself on camera. She also never felt the need to cover up who she was as an individual. She wasn't afraid to let her quirks come out -- she embraced it. She was and is an inspiration for many. With big hopes, she started towards her dreams of singing and never gave up.
Over the years Christina grew from her own music and covers to collaborating with other YouTubers. Sam Tsui is one of the many YouTube artists Christina collaborated with. Together they sang and filmed a cover of "Just a Dream" by Nelly in 2010. I remember when I first heard this cover... I was obsessed! I had it on repeat constantly and made sure everyone I knew had heard it, too.
In 2014 Christina partook in the Blind Auditions for The Voice. A once young girl with big dreams and talent was finally able to accomplish those dreams. Christina sung Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" during her audition. Christina started out with her first YouTube video being a cover of Miley's (Hanna Montana) "Don't Wanna Be Torn," and then took the world by storm with "Wrecking Ball" on The Voice.
Christina was mentored by Adam Levine throughout The Voice, and the news about her death took a staggering toll on him. Graciously, Adam offered to pay for her funeral expenses. Adam had only good things to say about her... "[she] was a natural and gifted talent that comes along so rarely." Christina touched the lives of many; whether they be family, friends, or fans.
My condolences go out to Christina’s family. She may be gone, but she will never be forgotten. She will always be a positive role model to so many young women; her music and talent will continue to be celebrated for many years to come. I am glad that I was able to discover and enjoy such an amazing talent -- RIP Christina Grimmie; gone but never forgotten.
