A Biblical perspective on the issue of anxiety

A Christian's View On Anxiety

Many people in today’s world suffer from a silent, yet incredibly harmful condition known as anxiety. To the non-anxious, anxiety is simply another emotion that soon will change or pass, and the typical response to it is to “get over it.” On the other side of the coin, the people who suffer from anxiety truly know how terrible anxiety can be. Anxiety is defined as “an abnormal and overwhelming sense of apprehension and fear often marked by physiological signs (sweating, tension, and increased pulse), by doubt concerning the reality and nature of the threat, and by self-doubt about one's capacity to cope with it.” A large amount of people in today’s society believes anxiety is nothing but an over exaggeration of fear that can simply be ignored. While they strongly believe that, it is not the case. Anxiety is a real condition that many people struggle with every day, and one of the best remedies is simply turning to God and seeking his help and wisdom when you are down.

There are many verses throughout each and every version of the Bible that plainly state God’s solution and prescription to anxiety. One of these is found in the book of Philippians. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6). When you have complete faith in Jesus Christ, you do not need to worry or be anxious about anything. God knows it all, he knows when you suffer from anxiety, and he knows all the burdens of your heart. Simply pray to God, and present your requests to him, and he will ensure that you will always be safe in his arms and no harm will overtake you. Paul also states that when you pray, pray with thanksgiving. This means to not simply ask God for what you want, but instead, thank God for all he has done as well.

Anxiety has been pegged as a “fake” and unrealistic condition in the modern world, this is due to many people simply saying it is just another emotion that soon will pass and it is easy to get over. While many people believe this, the opposing side knows that anxiety is a real condition that affects so many people in today’s world. It is an uncontrollable sense of fear that is extremely difficult to cope with and leads to major panic attacks. When an anxious person suffers from a panic attack, they usually feel lost and hopeless, like nothing will ever go right and they will forever feel this pain. This is why turning your eyes to God in times of anxiety is the ultimate remedy to help rid your life of that pain. God will forever protect and comfort those who have faith in him and love him with all their hearts because he loves us. When anxiety strikes, God will always be there to say don’t fear and he will be here for you through all the troubles of this world.

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.

Life is full of twists and turns, but you have to keep going.

Life is all about twist and turns, sideways and which ways. Nothing is permanent, so we should take risks, and chase our dreams. We are taught at a young age many lessons that will follow us into adulthood. What we aren't taught is how to feel, and how we handle those emotions. We just have to figure them out ourselves, and that's not fun. In my 21 years of living, I have come to know that way too many people can't handle emotions, or the fact that not everyone is dead inside like them. When you're like me, and you have zero control over your emotions, it's hard to feel comfortable around people who aren't so in touch with themselves. As much as I would like to feel nothing at times, I've accepted who I am and the fact that I can cry over practically nothing. So, there are some things in life that you just have to do.
