It has been a historic election for all of America. Two extreme parties, the first female candidate, and the other being nothing short of a jerk. Who would have thought that for many of us participating in election for the first time ever, we would end up with such a crazy poll?
The vast majority of us can't even begin to wrap our heads around the idea of who the two candidates of the 2016 presidential election came down to. One is a liar, one is very cruel. If you're a Christian, it's a given that you sat and stared at that ballot on November 8th with a very puzzled look on your face.
How does a Christian hold their religious faith during this year's election? What are we to do in a time where no matter what we choose, we feel like we are doing the wrong thing?
Well, we can sit around and complain about the candidates.
Or we can pray.
At first it seems simple, vote republican! Christianity is most aligned with the Republican Party, but it's extremely hard to support someone who uses such vulgar terms at women and demeans foreigns and gays. We are called to love our neighbors and hold from judgment, but we have been preached at by Donald Trump to do nothing but hate everyone except for white, educated men for the last year and a half. How does he hold a Christian's vote?
So we look at the other side in attempt to avoid letting such a hateful man be our president. We have Clinton. Oh great, this could be wonderful, a female president? Besides the fact that it's challenging for a Christian to vote democratic because of Gay rights, the right to choose, and certain drug usage... How does a Christian support the idea of someone who lies and cheats her way through her career? How does a Christian vote for a woman who does not set a good example of a strong, independent woman for our sisters, our daughters, and our friends?
Do you see where we are trapped? How can we possibly make a decision in this election and feel that it is what God is calling us to do?
The power of prayer.
I have accepted that God has taken this election and these next four years into his hands, because I have taken the time to pray and ask him what's going on with America.
Continue to love your neighbor, withhold from judgement, and have faith in this country.
"One Nation, under God."
It will be okay, America.
