When I was in middle school, I encountered some bullying. As with any kid who goes through the same experience, I wasn’t able to immediately recognize that this was unfortunately a normal part of life. I was scared and not able to tell anyone right away about what had happened, because I thought it was my fault in the first place.
I eventually noted the instance to my parents, and we immediately began looking for a martial arts studio, as we felt that this would provide an opportunity to improve areas in which I was lacking. Originally, I joined to help build my self-confidence and to gain knowledge of self-defense techniques. I never thought I would find anything much more than that.
I walked into a Taekwondo school called Ko’s Black Belt Academy, on May 20, 2009, and almost instantly fell in love. I was paired with the head instructor, Mr. Seth Wilson, who gave me the one-on-one trial lesson that would change my life forever. I started with the typical two-class-per-week schedule, but it was only a matter of time before I found myself hungry for more. It was no longer something that I could simply gain self-confidence and self-defense from; the body, the mental toughness, the strength and character that I had gained through Taekwondo all began to shape me into someone so different from before.
Having started the journey a little bit later in my upbringing, I was quickly provided with opportunities that many young martial artists dream of. After about two years of taking classes, I was offered the ability to begin helping out with classes. I took the opportunity, ran with it, and never looked back. I dedicated my life to giving back to the kids of the future. I wanted them to understand that no matter what position they found themselves in – from bullying to mental struggles – they were fully capable of being confident enough to do the right thing.
My instructor has often noted that “it takes a village to raise a child.” After working with kids for nearly five years, I have found this to be wholly true. No matter how young or old, experienced or inexperienced, every interaction with the next generation is irreplaceable. I often see the light on their faces at the chance to follow in the footsteps of an experienced martial artist, and it genuinely warms my heart that I have even the slightest potential to be a role model in their lives. Every child has a dream and the ability to reach it if they are provided the correct tools throughout their upbringing. I believe that it is our job as the older generation to help get them there.
In my seven years at Ko’s, I’ve found more than just a place to practice my skills; I’ve found a home, a family. I cannot imagine where I would be today if it weren’t for the people and the environment that completely changed my life. And I’m not the only one to say so. There are many people out in the world today who thank martial arts for giving them the life experience that no other sport ever could. It’s not just another athletic activity or hobby; it’s truly a way of life.
