As of right now, I am a sophomore at Flagler College. Located in Saint Augustine, Florida, Flagler College is home to about 2,500 kids and is a small liberal arts college. Flagler College offers a handful of majors including education, criminology, psychology, sociology and even coastal environmental science. I am currently majoring in criminology with a minor in law.
There are a handful of reasons why I decided to attend Flagler, but here are the main ones.
Small class sizes
The class sizes at Flagler College are fairly small. While sometimes it is a hassle to get into the class because of how small they are, it's definitely worth it. With smaller class sizes, it's easier to get to know the kids in your class and you're able to get more comfortable around them. It also helps with getting to know the professor.
Small campus
Another thing I love about Flagler is the small campus. You don't have to walk very far to get to your class and most everything is within walking distance. If you live in the Hotel Ponce de Leon, you're right above the dining hall and you can go to breakfast in your pajamas. If you live out in FEC, there is a gas station right across the street and makes for a nifty little convenient store! Living on a small campus is also cool because you recognize some of the same kids every year and you are able to make friends easier with a smaller campus.
Excellent location
The location of Flagler College is gorgeous. You're right in the center of downtown Saint Augustine, which is a very popular tourist spot. (You usually see more tourists than students sometimes.) It is also within walking distance of Saint George Street. Saint George Street is an awesome place to go shopping, try different kinds of pizza and even see a bunch of different puppies. Not to mention, the Night of Lights is pretty awesome in the winter time!
Connection with professors
Here at Flagler, you're able to get to know your professors one on one. Rather than emailing them and having it go through about 5 people before it actually gets to the professor, contacting Flagler professors is fairly easy. Meeting them is fairly easy too. Each professor is required to have a certain amount of office hours and the hours are pretty accessible. If they don't work with your schedule, the professors here at Flagler are more than willing to schedule an appointment on the side.
The clubs are diverse
The clubs here at Flagler are pretty diverse. They range from the Gaming Guild, Club Unity to YoungLife. They have clubs based on hobbies, like the surf team, clubs based on sexuality and even clubs based on religion. Almost every student here is a part of a club and that is because of how diverse our clubs are here at Flagler. Flagler even has academic clubs like the Flagler College Mock Trial Team for future law students/theatre kids.
Close to home
While some kids hate the idea of living close to home, I love it. I love being able to see my family (and my cats) often. While living far from home can help with becoming more independent, it does not mean that you cannot be independent while living close to home. If tragedy strikes, your folks are close by and are able to help you better. (It also feels good to have a home cooked meal sometimes.)
