Why I Chose DePauw

It was more than just the classes I could take or what I could major in.

About this time two years ago (wait, what?), I was beginning to submit my college applications and really narrow down where I actually wanted to go to school after graduating high school. If you read my previous post, then you know I was pretty gung-ho about attending Centre College for a long time; however, my final visit to the school put me back at square one. Thankfully, I wasn’t completely clueless for long because I visited DePauw soon after for Old Gold Weekend (our homecoming).

DePauw had always been on my list of colleges, but I kept it at the bottom because I did not feel like attending a school where so many members of my family had graduated from. It’s kind of ironic though since that ended up being one of the main reasons I ultimately decided to go to DePauw (like the day after I got back from visiting).

My weekend at DePauw was kicked off with me attending Fall Friday with my mom. There was a brief reception in the Emison admissions building, and then I went to a Communication class with a sophomore. That last part is kind of ironic too because the professor for the class I attended is now one of my advisors! When I got back to Emison for my upcoming campus tour, my mom was flocked around all her friends that had seniors looking at DePauw too. It’s amazing that the relationships she formed here back in the 1980's are still so strong.

My tour was pretty great, and afterwards my mom and I met up with my aunt. I then had an additional tour of the sorority house both my mom and aunt were a part of here. It was slightly intimidating but also a little cool to get a peek into what so many people on DePauw’s campus are a part of. I’m in a sorority now too, and it's honestly been one of my favorite experiences so far.

Throughout the rest of the weekend I continued to see other family members and alumni; lots of alumni. I remember thinking I was so impressed that these adults had such a good time at college that they came back for a weekend. And everyone seemed to know each other too, which is just impressive, but that’s what you find here at DePauw: a close-knit group of amazing people. That weekend I learned that I wanted to be part of a group like that. One that experienced great classes, had an abundance of opportunities, and some fun along the way.

In short, my weekend at DePauw was perfect: the falling leaves around East College, witnessing the impact DePauw has had on my family and the alumni, and the many opportunities waiting for me here.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?
