"The Bachelor" is known for having contestants who claim to be young professionals but tend to act like they are in the monkey exhibit at the zoo and they are fighting over the same banana, except that one banana is a seemingly perfect male figure.

It's a shame that the most superficial and overly competitive contestants seem to the majority of the spotlight on the show, but one contestant stood out to me for a different reason: she was real and she was deep. Instead of playing a fun icebreaker game or trying to kiss the bachelor right off the bat, Bekah, the short-haired, quirky, and edgy nanny from LA asked Arie a question that I think we should all take time to answer.

What are three things that make you excited to be alive right now?

1. I woke up with a roof over my head.

I normally wouldn't be this cliche, but I actually saw a news segment this morning about how the homeless rate has risen in the past year by 23%. It's becoming more and more common to live life in a tent, and in 20-degree weather... it's a shame.

2. I am blessed to further my education beyond high school.

I know college may not seem completely necessary to some, but in order for me to achieve the career of my dreams, I need to go. I feel sorry for those who are unable to follow their dreams because college isn't an option for them. I pray that they find an alternative that will make them just as happy.

College has not only given me knowledge, but it has given me irreplaceable experiences that I am thankful for every single day. It makes me excited to see what the future holds.

3. I live in a country where I am free to express my ideas and opinions on a platform like The Odyssey.

Without freedom of the press, I don't know where I would be. I would be following a completely different career. I would not have an outlet where I can be as creative as I wish.

When people approach me and say how an article I wrote changed their way of thinking or affected them in some way, it gives me a confidence boost unlike any other. I am thankful to live somewhere where the creative possibilities are truly endless.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
