Why I Chose Nursing

I love the medical field, this is why I chose nursing specifically.

Why I Chose Nursing
Susan Pinney

Nursing. One of the most highly needed jobs every where. According to the American Nurses Association, nursing is the "protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations."

With all of that in mind, I was raised in a family full of health field professionals and I loved every second of it. Nursing is the perfect job for anyone who loves to help others and definitely for people who do not want to stop learning. Helping others has always been something I enjoyed and when I shadowed a nurse for one of my duo credit courses and saw what nurses truly do, I fell in love.

Knowing that you will always be wanted and can help a person in pain or tell a person what is wrong and how you can help them is one of the greatest feelings. Whether you help an elderly woman with dementia or a 6- year-old boy with a cough, you are improving the lives of everyone you help, you may even be saving their life.

By choosing nursing to be my career I know that everyday will be beneficial, different, and educational. With knowing all of this, I know that I will never have a job I hate. Nursing gives you so many options as to which field you want to go into. You can be a travel nurse and go to many different hospitals around the U.S. or even the world. You can be a psychiatric nurse and work with mentally ill patients. You can even be a OB nurse and delivery babies!

Working as a nurse I know that I will not be tied down at a desk, I will not have to be bored on the job. Being a nurse means that you basically get the okay to be an adrenaline junkie and it be okay, since you will be saving lives and all. Since there are so many field choices you have the option to choose from, this is great, because you can change wherever your field of interest is as many times as you wish. Also, all nurses get to wear scrubs to work. How great is it that! You basically get to wear pajamas to work!

Essentially, nurses will always be needed. And that is one of the most wonderful things about nursing. The job opportunities are endless. How amazing is it that as a nurse you also could (by the US Department of Health and Human Services) use the federal loan repayment program and get your college loans paid for!

The main reason nursing chose me was not because I will get paid well or have great health benefits, but rather because I love to help people. A great nurse is always a remembered nurse. A nurse impacts people's lives daily. Nursing chose me because I know that I can impact people's lives for the better and maybe even save a few lives. Nursing chose me because I know I am strong enough to be a valued nurse.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
