Choosing Your College Not Your Life

What to expect at college.

Now is the time everyone is deciding on where to go to college and what will be the right fit for them. My first year at college has been a whirlwind of emotions and here're some things I think everyone going to college should know.

1. It is nothing like you expect

I am a very social person and expected to make friends instantly, go out all the time and love the "college experience." I quickly realized that I missed home constantly and making friends was a struggle. I even joined and dropped a sorority thinking it would help me make new friends. Eventually, I did make friends and have found out that I hate partying and would rather hike, visit the city, or hang in my dorm.

2. People are going to judge your college

I've had many people tell me that my school isn't a "real" college and that I wasn't having a good time because of my choice to go here. THAT IS SO WRONG. My college is just as real as any other college in the state and I didn't get a 4.0 first semester because it's easy, I worked my butt off for all A's. I was so wrapped up in what everyone thought about my school that I hated my first semester when I stopped caring what others thought and focused on why I choose my school I loved it so much more. Everyone fits at a certain college just like everyone fits with a certain person. Do not judge someone based on their college choice.

3. You'll probably consider dropping out about 10000x

When this happens you need to look at it very seriously. Is there something you'd rather be doing that you have a passion for and need to take some time off or is it simply not liking school. I constantly make lists of the pros of college and you need to remember that not everyone gets this opportunity so don't take it for granted. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE TO BE SUCCESSFUL. Does it give you a better chance and opportunity in some fields? Yes. But it doesn't make you a failure if you choose not to go to college.

4. College is fun

It is a time for growing and changing as a person. You become passionate about a subject and start working towards your dreams. After choosing a major and getting into those classes I enjoyed learning again and met people with the same passions as me. It is an amazing time no matter where you attend school.

At the end of your life it isn't going to matter what college you went to and if you got the best "college experience" it matters what you do with your life and how you impact others. Your degree does not define you. Your college does not define you. God is going to use you wherever you go and if you think going to a certain school makes you better than someone else you're wrong. I feel like people put so much pressure on this decision when it is so minuscule in comparison to the rest of your life. Truth be told there isn’t a “right” college to attend.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
