Going to college can be intimidating in more ways than one; bringing on a whole new social dynamic and being responsible for your own schedule is a tough transition to go through all at once. Despite the challenges of new independence, however, we cannot fail to stress about the biggest responsibility of all -- deciding our own futures.
The decision of a degree is nothing written in stone; however, most of us feel pressured to know what we want to major in immediately after graduating high school. Going into a university undecided is something that has become uncommon, however, this option allows students to be exposed to a variety of subjects and develop a passion for a focused matter through their general studies. Overall, understand that the final decision of your degree should be thought of over time and through experience. It is important not only to be exposed to new things but to allow this new knowledge to influence you.
“Most people...are like a falling leaf that drifts and turns in the air, flutters, and falls to the ground. But a few others are like stars which travel one defined path: no wind reaches them, they have within themselves their guide and path.”
-Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha
Here, we can find inspiration from Hesse’s analogy referring to “wind” as knowledge. To be a star is to be close minded, while a falling leaf has no sureness in their path and go where they are guided. Allowing yourself to be visible to the unknown will allow you to hunger for more of something you find your passion in; however, the new challenge is determining whether your passion secures your financial future.
To be brief, let your finances come second in your thoughts toward a degree. Perhaps if your interests fall in something highly specific, make it into your minor study under a more general major. This will allow you more possibilities after graduation to find employment and give you the opportunity to specialize in your interests later on. In the end, college is meant to drive you toward succeeding in something you feel strongly about; so let yourself explore and be sure about what you decide in studying.
