Most people my age made this decision about a year and a half ago. I just wasn't one of them. I thought I had the best plan, and went to beauty school to have an actual career while I went to college for my ultimate dream; to be a therapist. Well, turns out it was not for me and I couldn't stick it out. You live and learn! So now here I am, trying to decide on a college.
My whole life I've had my heart set on the University of Kentucky. Why wouldn't I want to go home and be close to my extended family? Well with that choice comes the fact of out of state tuition which gets rather pricey. Though UK has always been my top choice I have to go with the facts, while I don't think it would be a bad choice for a psychology major it's also not the best choice. So then the question isn't should I go there because I want to? It’s should I go there because I’m going to get the best education for the field I want to go into to. Like I said, I don't think it’s a bad choice for my degree, but on bestpsychologydegrees.com’s “Top 50 Universities to Earn a Psychology Degree” it wasn't ranked. And on another that listed to top 100, it still wasn't listed.
So going with the more education route leads me to, I don't even want to say it as a born and bred Wildcat, Indiana University. Now while personally, I don’t want to be a Hoosier, it’s almost worth it for an awesome education in a field that I love. IU ranked #14 in the “Top 50..” And #13 in the top 100. You can't really fight that one. IU gives me a “higher ranked” education, keeps me close to the immediate family and in a more familiar environment but I don't know if my heart and childhood dream will be overpowered by that.
Now I feel what all my friends dealt with senior year. Picking a school is hard. Probably more hard now that I've tried a type of school and didn't like it. You feel like your whole future depends on this decision and while it plays a part, picking a school isn’t everything. You don't have to pick the “best” school. But you do need to pick a school that you feel the best at. Visit them in the middle of the year when people are constantly around campus. Eat at places around. Talk to people who actually go there. Pick a school for the vibes and feelings it leaves you with. Pick a school for you and your experiences. No employer is going to pick an IU degree over a UK one. Or at least it’s unlikely. There going to look at the degree no matter where it’s from and realize how much work and dedication went into getting it, not which mascot you were rooting for.
