In This Article:

Skinning knives are important gear for any hunting adventure. If you aren't familiar with skinning knives, these are rather different than other fixed blade or folding blade knives.

Just like any other category of survival knives, skinning knives comes in various varieties and the best skinning knife is more dependent on your hunt. For instance, skinning a large animal like deer will need a different variety of knife than a small animal. Similarly, there are various other aspects that contribute to the utility and choice of a skinning blade.

Now, to help you out in choose the best skinning knife, we have put together some important consideration that will certainly help you make the right choice and enjoy your trophy hunt with easy skinning. So, let's get started immediately.

Blade Length:

Irrespective of the purpose of a knife (fixed blade knife, folding blade knife etc.) blade length is one of the most important considerations of all. As far as skinning knives are concerned, the optimum blade length is primarily determined by the animal you want to hide. For instance, a rather smaller 3-inch blade is sufficient to unhide smaller animals like rabbit, however, to unhide larger animals including elks and deer, you'll need a larger blade (6 inches or more).

Full Tang:

Tang refers to the part of the blade that's placed inside of the handle. A full tang knife will have a homogenous metal thickness inside the handle as of the blade, whereas, a half tang knife will have a smaller metal thickness inside the handle as compared to the blade thickness. Best skinning knives need to have a full tang, as it directly influences the durability and strength of the knife. A half tang knife is much prone to wear and breaking than full tang knife.

Overall Knife Length:

Overall knife length refers to the total length of the knife from the tip of the blade to the end of the handle (for folding blade knives, total length is determined with open blade). The overall length is important as it affects the ease of carrying and ease of handling. Too small or too large knives aren't much comfortable to carry or work around. Thereby, the length of the knife is more dependent upon your comfort in handling.

Folding Blade Knives:

Folding blade skinning knives are super compact and convenient to use. They can easily be fitted in the pocket and carried anywhere you like. However, one downside for folding blade knives is their durability. Since they have hinged, they are more vulnerable to break than fixed blade knives. Nonetheless, if you know how to efficiently use skinning knives, folding blade varieties are perfect to be carried along any trip.

Sheath:

Sheath refers to the protective covering of the blade. This is especially important in fixed blade knives to ensure safety and protection. The sheath is also important to protect the blade from wear and tear and retain its edges for a long time. Generally, leather sheath is used as the best sheathing material owing to their durability and protection.

Handle Material:

Handle material is particularly important for multiple reasons. Primarily, a strong handle material is necessary to protect knife from breaking, moreover, the handle material and design also determined the ergonomics of the knife, which is an important consideration for a comfortable grip in all environments. Different materials are used to manufacture the handles of skinning knives, however, plastic or rubber handle are especially suited for their stronger grip and ease of handling for a long time.
