I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones. Most incoming freshmen are fretful over how they should be spending the rest of their working lives, worried about making the wrong choice. They choose to go in as undecided and try their hand at a plethora of fields. However, there is always this looming dread that if you don't study what you are destined to do in life, you are simply wasting time, money, and effort.
Whether you're going in as undecided or are timidly deciding about changing your current major or more than sure about your choice, there is no shame or success in knowing or not knowing before anyone else. After all, you enter college as a seventeen or eighteen-year-old. You're not expected to know what you want to do fresh out of high school as you walk onto your campus' steps.
As for me, I truly do feel as though I have lucked out on the "major" anticipation that comes with the college experience. Not that I still don't have my silent worries, but I am going into college knowing what I want. I am studying Forensic Science and Psychology, a combination that will hopefully equip me with the tools to fight the world's evils one day.
You may be thinking, "Okay, you say this now, but who knows what you will feel by the end of your first semester?" Don't get me wrong, I cannot simply assume fully guaranteed that this plan will hold up in the future. But I am confident in my choice on one simple facet: passion.
In high school, I conducted Psychology research within different demographics and fell in love with how we as humans feel, behave and respond to our environment. I am simply intrigued by the way the mind works and how pulling in different directions can completely change our psyche. And, as cheesy as this sounds, but binge-watching "Criminal Minds" for five months straight placed me in the direction I had so eagerly been searching for my entire life. I don't just want to help those with mental issues, but I want to profile them and work with the most deviant minds out there. The little aspects of my life culminated into me realizing what I am destined to do in this world. I am here to bring safety to our cities and justice to those who are suffering. I found my passion sooner than most in simple ways.
I can't tell you exactly how you can find your passion. I don't know if your affinity for writing means anything more or if your interest in international relations could translate to a successful career. I can't give you the advice on exactly how to find your passion. But I can tell you that once you do find it, your life will truly depend on it. All that matters in the world is fueling it and building it into your future with every step you take.
Your college major will hopefully reflect the passion that you one day find. There is no simple equation that magically can help you along the way, but I can assure you with a guarantee that once you find what drives you, nothing will be the same. So, what's the simple guide to choosing a college major? Find your passion and run with it.
