Why I Choose Oklahoma State University

Here is what led me to becoming an OSU Cowboy.

A lot of people ask me why I choose the college that I did to go to. They seem to honestly want to know what makes Oklahoma State so special that I choose to go here. Well I will tell you why I choose Okstate.

At first I thought I wanted to go to the university of Oklahoma or better known as OU. I thought about no other school because I thought OU was the place for me, and that no one was going to stop me from going there. Well I was wrong it was not who would stop me it was what. OU did not offer me enough financial aid to be able to afford it. I was going to be probably around $7,000.00 short. I kept saying I would not go to OSU because I was so stubborn to look at the big picture. I kept thinking about that every moment and only about me. Yes college is about me, but when your parent is helping you then you have to be considerate about what you are asking for. I could ask my single parent mom to cover such a large amount.

I realized I hadn't applied to anywhere else, and I thought I need to give Okstate a chance because I did not have many options being that it was April. So I applied to OSU and realized something. They gave me more academic scholarship money and other scholarships to help pay for my school. It made me feel more appreciated. They accepted me into their honors college when OU said since my ACT was one point off I was not good enough to be in their honors college. When I toured OSU the tour guides were ten times better than the ones I had encountered at OU. I felt like my tour of Oklahoma state's campus was memorable while OU's was not.

To be clear I am not trying to bash OU any way whatsoever. I think they are a good school, but well OSU is better. OSU helped me out in April make things all come together. They helped me find good classes and be in honors housing in Bennett. OSU made things happen quickly and answered my questions fast for me.

Now being in my third semester at OSU I can tell you the best thing that happened to me was OU not giving me enough money to go there. I love OSU and the friends I have made here. The classes and professors have been absolutely amazing. I picked a different major than what I had attended to study at OU, but I feel like anthropology and history are what I am meant to do and not petroleum geology which is what I would have done at OU. OSU is such a happy campus and everyone is super friendly. Yes I grew up in Oklahoma, and tons of my friends go to OSU, but I have also made many friends along the way. If I could do it all over and OU had given me more money I would still pick OSU after knowing what I do about OSU. OSU is a family that helps out its family.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
