I need an intervention.
Here I am, standing up, hanging my head in shame, and confessing:
My name is Kaycee Aultman. I'm eighteen years old, and if there was a movie of my life, my catchphrase would be "turn up." I overuse textual punctuation- especially the exclamation point- and I am a huge proponent of emojis.
There, I've said it.
But if that news just caused you to face-palm, here's the good news. Beginning June 21, you can transfer that emotion to your cellphone keyboard, along with 71 other emojis. Included in the releases are also the much needed additions like a black heart, stuffed flatbread, and selfie camera.
Cry no more, you children lacking a clown face to send to your bestie after rewatching the nightmarish "It" during sleepovers. Or you, Disney fan needing a Pinocchio nose. Or you, Mother Christmas. There is now six dozen new emojis to choose from. And I, personally, am quite excited.
A friend of mine recently told me, "You text just the way you talk," and I adored it. As a soon-to-be Writing and Communications major, I believe conversations, whether text or verbal, to be a cornerstone of modern society. And funnily enough, each person has their own style. That's one reason I love to read with all of my heart. Each author has their own voice, which is a prominent determinant of their respective success. For me, it means dense and emotional explanation. Even if you're reading what I've written, you'll know how I felt when I typed it.
Communication in today's world is also such a versatile concept. Call, email, snapchat, iMessage, there are so many options. Specifically with controversies which argue about how easily a text message can be misinterpreted, emojis lend a personal element to what could easily become a monotonous routine. Texting, and my use of emoticons, allows me to stay in contact with friends of mine who live hours away. One of my best friends is leaving in the fall for Kennesaw University, and I'm not sure how I'm going to manage without her beside me everyday. But, I'll stay in contact with her through my phone, and when she comes home, I'll use it to find her too.
So whenever Apple updates my keyboard and I receive my 72 new emojis, I will take them in stride. Sure, I don't use a vast 80% of them as it is, but it's nice to know that the choices are there. I like knowing that whenever I send a message, those who read it can feel my personality. There is so much love in my heart that I want to share with anyone who will listen, and if that means sending laughing faces or pink flowers or red hearts then so be it. Do me a favor, and when the fist bump emoji is released, send it my way.
