“A Choice To Change The World,” Spelman’s motto and challenge, demands that we commit to preparing ourselves for a life that upholds achievement. As we enter into a new school year, how do we make this a reality?
Here are a few ways:
- Work Hard
- Be Intentional.
- Dream On.
You made it to Spelman, congratulations! The fact that you are here is a sign that you know the value and habits of discipline, sacrifice, excellence and hard work. Getting into a position to change the world requires hard work. Each of us has dreams and goals that will only be accomplished through a commitment to working hard. As a Spelman woman, you have a proven that you are a hard worker. As you continue, work harder. Work in the face of adversity, struggle, and injustice. Despite the obstacles, your decision to become a Spelman woman means that you desire to do work that will allow you to one day change the world.
Be purposeful in everything that you do. Remember, you made a choice to become a Spelman woman determined to change the world. Therefore, in everything that you say and in everything that you do, ask yourself, “for what purpose?” If you find that you cannot answer the question of why you are doing what you do, then reconsider what you are doing. Everything that you do should lead you to a place where you can change the world. Always choose to go the extra mile. Remember, you are branding yourself. How do you want to be remembered? What impact do you want to make? Network with your Spelman sisters. When in doubt, reach out. Connect with others who challenge and hold you accountable. Have goals yes, but also have objectives that you can measure in order to see the steps you are making. Take advantage of every opportunity. You were born to be successful!
One of the worst things anyone can do is stop dreaming. Don’t become so busy that you forget about your dreams. This year, right now is the time to spread your wings. Your dreams are the ideas that lead you to a path of greatness and help you achieve more than you can ever imagine. Your dreams help you form creative and unheard processes (the work allows you to implement those processes). Your dreams are the ideas that give you a chance to reach the potential that God has set for your life. Don’t let your dreams slip away. Keep them alive. Keep them present for they serve as the driving force that help you do good work and by being intentional. Your dreams will give you a glimpse of your ability to change the world. Dream on my sisters, dream on.
