China's Plan For Reducing Climate Change Could Save Our Planet's Future

The world is essentially being swallowed in carbon dioxide emissions, but "Forest City" could slow it substantially.

As of right now, humans are on the path to increased global temperatures and total depletion of fossil fuels that will eventually be our downfall, and it seems as though the United States government is doing very little to combat our almost sealed fate.

Because the United States is the second largest producer of carbon dioxide emissions, it seems as if we should be doing more to focus on cutting down. On the other hand, China is the largest producer but is doing much more to reverse their mistakes, including planning the "Forest City."

Liuzhou Forest City was designed by the renowned Italian architect Stefano Boeri to be constructed in southern China and completed by 2020. The overall layout of the 324-acre city will have 70 buildings that make up offices, homes, schools and other complexes found in any other city. Boeri's architect firm plans to incorporate 40,000 trees and over one million different plants covering the city.

Because the city will essentially be shielded by plants and greenery, it will have the ability to absorb over 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year and 57 tons of pollutants per year, all while producing 900 tons of oxygen per year.

Although the trees and plants are the main focus of the city, Liuzhou will also incorporate other forms of sustainable energy in their design, including the use of geothermal energy for air conditioning and solar panels on the roofs for electricity. Electric cars will be the default personal vehicle and public transportation will be ran on an electric rail line throughout the city.

In the future, 30,000 residents could be living in the ambitious and groundbreaking Liuzhou Forest City, and its success could drive other countries to practice the same type of community building. The Chinese government is already attempting to move two million citizens living in rural areas to urban cities in an effort to reduce poverty and promote their modernization and moving them to plant-based cities is a genius plan to build more environmental cities across the world.

The world is reliant on economically dominant countries like China and the United States to influence their economies and culture, so China is taking a step in the right direction by potentially inspiring other countries to construct eco-friendly cities or just to live more eco-friendly lifestyles.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
