Change is sometimes a hard thing to understand and accept.

It's a new year, and the transition from 2016 to 2017 is well on its way. The next release from Best Friend Books focuses on transitions and the fact that things are constantly changing. It's a difficult reality to accept. Especially now, when things are so contrary. Nothing we see or hear from long-trusted sources can be believed with 100% certainty. As an adult, it's, at best, unnerving — at worse terrifying and not conducive to sleep. We can only hope that our "better angels" will triumph. Many days, it feels exactly the opposite.

I been thinking that our existence has become one opposite day after the other. Whatever you hear, you should immediately assume the opposite is true. Hard enough for adults, even more confusing for the youngest among us.

Our latest title, "Is, Was, Will Be" (brilliantly written by Lisa Combs), focuses on transitions and change. This particular book has been a challenge to my artistic style, as we wanted a more natural look rather than the whimsical approach of our previous books. One of the spreads in the book talks about a shout becoming an echo. This illustration stopped me dead in my tracks for nearly a week. How do you illustrate a sound wave becoming an echo, that is accurate, yet uncomplicated? I finally figured it out. Once that illustration was complete, I finished the rest of the drawings in just over a week. Here's the finished spread:

Today, Lisa and I reviewed a hard copy of the book, made changes and uploaded the latest files to CreateSpace. We ordered an actual proof copy of the book. This will arrive Thursday. Once we've proofed this version and are satisfied that all is as it should be, the book will become available for purchase through Amazon.

During our meeting we also planned what books were to come next—Lisa has completed manuscripts for four others. Here are the titles: "Small Things," "Home," "Next Day Better," and "Patch of Sky." Our deadline to have these complete is April of this year. Please check out our website (http://www.bestfriendbooks.com) for upcoming release dates and events.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
