Let’s face it; Donald Glover and Childish Gambino are the real life Miley and Hannah. As one of the most multifaceted creators of the generation, Glover is extremely well known for his stand up comedy, TV shows Community and Atlanta, and his rap albums.
He’s also been cast as young Lando Calrissian in the upcoming, untitled standalone Han Solo Star Wars movie, and will appear in Spiderman: Homecoming.
Although he released his first album all the way back in 2005, Childish Gambino gained a lot of mainstream popularity through his 2013 album “Because the Internet”. Fans obsessed over his insanely clever and even hilarious punchlines, rhymes, and classically produced beats. But with his most recent album, Gambino dropped the rap style he was known for and picked up, well, something else.
His latest album, ‘Awaken ,My Love!’ features a different side of Gambino that we had only really experienced with his popular song ‘Sober’, released in 2012. Who knew that Donald Glover would also have excellent vocals? I’m kidding. Have you seen this guy’s resume? We expected nothing less.
With such a classic funk style, it's hard to believe that this project came out in 2016. You can see through this piece that Glover truly is an old soul. The California-born entertainment genius has provided us with great albums and meaningful lyrics for years, and he didn’t disappoint with his latest release at all.
The album’s release was much more hyped than the album itself, an unfortunate curse in the music world. Much like “Frank Ocean’s “Blond”, I noticed the tweets slowed down after the album came out, for only for close to a week- after fans had survived on it for the last few days.
It can be hard to sit down and listen to an entire album. It takes patience, lack of judgement, and a lot of spare time. I like to pair this with other activities like homework or taking a walk to really put the album into my life.
‘Awaken my love’ has an old-school funk inspiration, which is definitely brought to life in this 11 track album. From the classic style acoustic instruments in songs like ‘Have Some Love’ to the emotion presented in songs like ‘Redbone’ and ‘Me and Your Mama’, this is an album that you need to listen to!
