In a world where you're rapidly becoming an adult, one of the best ways to curb this sudden exposure to responsibilities and taxes is to watch an classic childhood movies. Reminiscing on the time when your biggest worry was whether or not your mom was going to make you eat vegetables with dinner, you open your box or drawer of movies. They're all there. "Toy Story." "The Lion King." "Aladdin." "Cinderella." But buried underneath your favorite classics are probably some movies that you forgot about. Just because they're not as popular, however, doesn't mean that they're not childhood gold. Here are some awesome movies from your childhood that you may have forgotten about:
1. "Surf's Up."
Although this movie is a little quirky, you can't resist the all-star cast of Shia Labeouf, Zooey Deschanel and Jeff Bridges, just to name a few. Also, it's hilarious, so you need to go back and watch it, especially if you've forgotten about Chicken Joe.
2. "Hoodwinked."
One of Dreamworks' lesser known movies, "Hoodwinked" takes the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood and spins it on its head in an extremely clever and entertaining way. The end also reveals a plot twist that even I didn't see coming, and I've seen the movie before. Plus it has extreme grandmothers and suave detective frogs. What else would you want out of a classic children's story?
3. "Space Jam."
The showdown between the Tune Squad and the Monstars was perhaps the single greatest event of my childhood. Warner Brothers introduces Lola Bunny, and Billy Murray plays himself and wears an umbrella hat for most of the movie because he can. The entire movie is essentially an open jab at Michael Jordan's baseball career. If the Space Jam theme song didn't automatically play in your head when you saw the logo, it's been too long.
4. "The Road To El Dorado."
Another Dreamworks movie, "The Road to El Dorado" follows Spanish "explorers" Miguel and Tulio in their quest to find the city of gold. It's become something of a cult classic in recent years, and you should really be a part of it. The entire movie is figurative and literal gold.
5. "An American Tail."
Learning about American history has never been so easy, entertaining, or heartbreaking. I don't know who decided that a story about a Russian mouse emigrating to America was a good idea for a children's movie, but they were 150-percent correct.
6. "Anastasia."
Even though "Anastasia" isn't a Disney movie, it's still an one of the best childhood princess movies, complete with a forgotten past, a handsome prince, a happy ending and a story that is historically based on reality with a fairytale twist. Learning about the Russian relvolution in school, all I could hear was "Once Upon A December" playing in my head, and that's exactly how it should be.
7. "Meet The Robinsons."
Because "Meet The Robinsons" is a computer animated Disney movie that was not made by Pixar, I understand that the concept is scary. I do. But this movie is hilarious and heartwarming, teaching one of Walt Disney's favorite lessons: keep moving forward. It also has a T-rex named "Tiny." I don't know how a movie like that could be bad.
8. "Shrek Two."
So the Shrek franchise has been a mixed bag. Honestly, its entire reputation has been tainted by the last two movies and some questionable YouTube videos; but everyone remembers the first movie being good, and the second movie is horribly underrated.
9. "A Bug's Life."
Pixar's second movie doesn't get as much hype compared to some the studio's giant features, but this little picture has so much heart that you can't help but laughing when Heimlich declares that he wants to be a beautiful little butterfly. It's the most underrated Pixar movie by a long shot, and definitely worth watching.
10. "Pokemon: The First Movie" (and every movie after that).
Did you want to be the very best like no one ever was when you were a kid? Then you probably watched "Pokemon: The First Movie" on repeat when you were younger and then promptly forgot about it. But what's better than talking Mew Two or real fighting clone? How about Ash emerging from the darkness with all of the real Pokemon into the arena? Obviously, you have to have a marathon of all of the movies because just one is never enough.
11. "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."
Even though most kids turned away from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" when they were younger, it's worth taking another look because the complex, layered plot and intense music. And what movie could possibly fail with Jason Alexander as a sidekick (even though the gargoyles are the most questionable part of that movie)?
12. "The Prince of Egypt."
An ancient story set to a killer soundtrack. It's the traditional story of Moses told in an untraditional way, and it's a great childhood movie that you probably forgot about.
