Chicago Public Schools Strike - What About Their Student's Future?

As a Money Mentor at NextGenVest, I've been lucky enough to be given the chance to converse with thousands of high school and college students about a critical topic - paying for an attending college. There's a gigantic dilemma across the United States when it comes to higher education that NextGenVest is desperately trying to solve. The truth is that there are so many students struggling to make their way through the difficult path of figuring out their futures, especially when it comes to figuring out how they are going to be able to afford to attend college.

Recently, Chicago Public Schools have just made that even harder for their current senior class. As the faculty has plans to go on strike in just a few short weeks, this leaves their students hopeless and lost when it comes to how they are going to get everything prepared for their college applications. The opening date for the FAFSA application has already passed this weekend, and still so many students are desperately trying to figure out how to make this insane situation work out in their favor.

Through our texting service at NextGenVest, we received a text message from a student this past week regarding the situation. The messages received are in the screen shot above. This student, already stressed enough as it is with senior year events and academic responsibilities, now has to worry about the fact that she will not have a school counselor around to help her process her college applications. As she mentioned - what is she to do?

The problem is that as these teachers are striking for their rights and equality, the students who they have been hired to teach are suffering. The resources that many more affluent schools have for their students already aren't in the picture for many of the students in the Chicago Public School District. Factor in their now lack of teacher and guidance counselor resources, there isn't anyone in their school district pushing these kids to apply to colleges and helping them achieve their dreams of being able to attend.

For many of these students who have their high school graduation right around the corner, the only major resource that they have for their college applications and finances is NextGenVest. The company is currently focusing on these low income areas without the major resources to get into colleges, and giving them free codes for the text message service. These students now have the opportunity to text a certified Money Mentor, such as myself, to help them every step of the way through their college application process.

Suddenly, these students can breathe a bit easier, as they finally have someone on their side who they can trust and rely on to get them through one of the most stressful times in a students life.

If you or another student you know are going through a similar situation of trying to navigate your way through the biggest financial decision of a young persons life, NextGenVest wants to help you out!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
