As a reluctant fourth-year, I’ve realized that this year marks my last chance to make sure I try all of the amazing restaurants Charlottesville has to offer. Having always thought Threepenny Café looked festive and fun with its patio, I took advantage of the warm weather last week to scope it out. I already want to go back, and here’s why you should, too.
The space is very modern. When you walk in, you are greeted by red walls, sophisticated lighting, Euro-chic tables, and a modern bar space. As I was there when it was very warm, all of the diners were outside on their lovely patio space, which features high patio tables covered by red umbrellas. The star of the scene is a gorgeous old-fashioned stone fountain that marks the center of the patio. Lights on overhead strings complete the relaxed yet elegant feel. It was also fun to watch the scene on Main Street as a result of the patio's proximity to the street.

The cuisine is globally inspired and you’re encouraged to do an Act I, II, and III — appetizer, soup or salad, and entrée. Appetizers range from your traditional cheese board to more unique options like tempura asparagus and roasted bone marrow. I split the olive medley with a friend, which was a delicious mixture of olives with balsamic and feta, as well as bread.
Act II also features a variety of delicious options. I went for the seafood gumbo, which consists of shrimp, crab, okra, onions, peppers, and tomato. It was great and refreshing to focus on the seafood without the usual sausage. Entrees also will satisfy a crowd, ranging from chicken, scallops, tuna, pork, and beef Wellington, as well as a wide variety of pizzas. The global aspect really comes in here, as you can order Spanish- or Italian-inspired pizzas. I was intrigued by the North African eggplant entrée, which is a great vegetarian option and had great ethnic flavors. My friend opted for the scallops with curried potatoes and caramelized fennel, and it also looked delicious.
The cafe also has an extensive list of cocktails, from your traditional old fashioned to a daiquiri with Bacardi rum, cherry liqueur, and grapefruit juice. There are also wine and beer choices. It’s a short eight-minute walk from grounds, so next time you’re feeling adventurous and hungry, I highly recommend you check it out! If you want to scope out the menu, here is the link.
