Chasing The Forgotten Dream

Don't ever let go of the one dream that is always in the back of your mind.

Chasing The Forgotten Dream

We all have that one dream. The dream that we never pursued. The dream that slipped away. The dream that didn't go anywhere, so we just forgot it existed. Yes, you know the dream I'm talking about.

The problem with that dream is that when we remember it, we spend the rest of our lives regretting the fact that we didn't chase it. Every minute of every hour, we sit there pondering how life could've been different if we had just taken it one step further, or if we hadn't given up. That dream looms over your head for days on end.

For me...that dream was writing. When I applied for the Odyssey, I applied by chance. I wasn't expecting too much, let alone the opportunity to be a creator. I read Odyssey's articles all the time, but I never thought I'd be able to do something within the site.

I've watched people chase dreams and fall short. I've watched people give up. And following this...I always watch people sit in a puddle of regret.

Dreams are the strongest driving power we have to get through life. If we aren't chasing dreams or at least trying to, then what is our purpose?

Without dreams, we wake up with no purpose. Yes, it's harsh. But it's true. Without dreams, you are simply going through the motions. Every day is filled with the same events surrounding us, and we just feel sort of melancholy. Yes, I've been there. It's not the way I ever want to live again.

Setting realistic dreams is important, but setting unrealistic dreams is also important. If you have a dream that is so over the top, but you still fall short, I promise you that you will land in a place that is still better than where you started. Unrealistic dreams often cause you to push yourself harder than realistic dreams because you are trying to achieve the unachievable. By taking those extra steps further to something unrealistic, you may discover a dream you didn't know you had.

So...that application that you've been debating whether or not to send in, send it. That video of you singing that you want the world to see, post it. That big step that you're afraid to take, take it. That job that you want to apply for, but can't find the strength, apply. Do whatever it takes. If you fall short, get back up again. You can do it. Don't ever feel like you can't, because you are capable of worlds more than you think.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
