The CW has recently announced a reboot of "Charmed," the beloved show about three sister witches, is in the works. What's the catch? The original actresses will not be part of the show and it will be set in the 1970s. This is a horrible idea.
Many of the fans of "Charmed" were petitioning and hoping a reunion of the show would occur with all of the original actors (myself included). We all wanted Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, Rose McGowan, and Shannen Doherty to return to the show and kick some demon butt. However, The CW had something else in mind. Here are a few reasons as to why the reboot is a terrible idea:
1. Fans are used to the original cast.
Although the show has been over for many years, fans can still stream "Charmed" on Netflix and other websites, allowing the show to stay alive for them. With a new cast, fans won't be able to easily adjust to new faces.
2. No family ties.
There have been a few rumors online saying that the new three witches will not be family but a group of friends. There's nothing wrong with them being friends but the best part of the girls from "Charmed" was that they were sisters. They grew up together, made jokes about family members together (mostly about grams), lived together, shared everything together, etc. As the show's executive producer, Brad Kern, once said, they were never just a group of witches that happened to be sisters but sisters that happened to be witches. They showed that family and fighting for one another was always their top priority.
3. It's set in a different time period.
Let's face it. Most of the people that will be interested in watching the reboot might not have been alive during the 1970s. Unless it's "Game of Thrones," most of the millennials of today might not want to see a show set in another time period. "Charmed" took place during present time, including current events into the show. Yes they did have flashbacks and traveled through time but it was more relatable to its audience due to being set in present time.
Who knows? Maybe the show will be a hit and us angry fans might end up loving it. But "Charmed" will always have a special place in our hearts (and we will still be chanting the original spells during commercial breaks).
