The protests in Charlotte are more than just black and white. It goes deeper than the problem of police brutality, even deeper than the shooting of Keith Lamont Scott. The protests mourn the senseless deaths and the lack of justice in America.
The people of Charlotte, the families of the victims, the black community, and anyone else with a heart for peace are angered because of the lives taken in Charlotte. It could have been someone in your own family who was the victim - and for some, it was.
The riots in Charlotte are a problem of peace and justice. The murder of Keith Lamont Scott was a disruption of peace, and the protests have fueled the fire. People are angry, and they are retaliating with full force. It is questionable if the protests in Charlotte are actually making any advances in the Black Lives Matter movement, or if they are destroying the image of the movement.
Nearby communities, such as Winthrop University, are making a step in the right direction. Winthrop students have set out to bring light on the situation and make a demonstration of peace (pictured below). A candlelight vigil was held on September 9 to show support of those impacted by police brutality. Students showed their support through spoken word, song, dance, and more.
It is peaceful demonstrations like these that move the world closer to peace and hope. It is important to slow down and take a minute to acknowledge the horrific nature of the things happening. Remember that life is precious. Take a moment to reflect and show the people you care about that you love them because they can be taken away so quickly. Spread love and peace, and pray for Charlotte.
