Tradition is a big part of life in my classroom, and the one everyone remembers most is our Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Everyone looks forward to this amazing Thanksgiving tradition every year. Kids I've looped with, younger siblings, little cousins, nieces, nephews and random kids who have heard the legend look forward to it. The first day of school one of the kids I looped with whispered to me "Are we going to do Charlie Brown this year"? Of course the answer was yes! I wouldn't miss it for the world. We work for a whole week to get ready...
Our shared reading book for the week is this.We read it on the iPad through airplay, and they take turns reading it during literacy block! We get to know the story backward and forward.
The next piece to our Thanksgiving puzzle is our reader's theater. I modified our shared reading book into a reader's theater with parts at various reading levels. Some students read alone, others read chorally. Everyone participates, and I have stronger readers paired with struggling readers to ensure that every part is read. Here is a link to the reader's theater.
We work, work, work on our fluency in reading groups all week until Friday when we host a gala performance and delicious feast!! Of course we a serve a traditional...(well according to Charlie Brown that is) feast complete with buttered toast, pretzels, jelly beans, and popcorn! We invite parents and staff to join us...
It's a day they will remember forever! We are not only creating learners, we're creating memories! Give it a try! You won't regret it!
