The Chargers have found their new home as they made the announcement on Thursday January 12 that they're moving to Los Angeles.
Chargers' president and CEO, Dean Spanos, released a statement the same morning expressing his wise but difficult choice he had to overcome. Spanos informed to NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell, on Wednesday that he wanted the franchise to move and start a new market in Los Angeles.
The mayor of Inglewood, James Butt, stated on USA TODAY that he is planning to meet with Spanos in a news conference next week.
The Chargers have been through difficult situations as Spanos tried different plans to keep the team at its rightful home. The first plan was to join with the Oakland Raiders by moving to Los Angeles and build a new stadium in Carson. The plan was rejected by the NFL owners but were in favor of the Rams to move into LA and build a 2.6 million dollar stadium in Inglewood. The owner did, however, gave Spanos the opportunity to move to LA with the Rams and share the new stadium. The deadline to decide was on January 17.
Spanos, however, didn't give up as he chose another path by building a new stadium in San Diego. The venue was going to be 1.8 million dollars and Spanos let the people of San Diego vote on it. After the voting, only 44 percent of the population approved the project which gave Spanos no other choice but to leave San Diego.
After Spanos' announcement, fans in San Diego didn't take it well as they showed their disappointment by protesting at the San Diego Chargers headquarters and threw their jerseys and other gear in a huge pile. On the same day, the Chargers changed their logo to what almost looked like the Los Angeles Dodgers' logo. With the new logo, fans on social media started to troll the Chargers on how ridiculous it looked.
The Inglewood Stadium is said to be finished by 2019. In the meantime, the Chargers will temporarily play at the Stubhub Center in Carson. The Chargers have been playing in San Diego for 56 years and have never won a Super Bowl. The only Super Bowl appearance they had were against the 49ers in 1994 and ended up losing 49-26.
