We all enjoy Beyoncé and her song "Run the World (Girls)." However, we all know that it simply is not true. In the United States, there are three words that when minorities hear them, they become fearful. White. Christian. Male. After watching a YouTube Video by one of my favorite YouTubers, Jon Jorgenson, I decided to talk about what he addresses in his video.
I myself am a white Christian male. I have brown hair. I have blue eyes. I dress normally (whatever that means). I am the majority. I am not afraid. I can confidently go anywhere and do anything, and not be concerned about what others think of me. Yet, that is obviously not the case with everyone. What I mean by that is I don't know what it is like to be walking alone at night and be afraid. I do not know what it is like to be afraid of the police. I do not know what it is like to be judged by the clothes I wear. All I know is that I am the majority and don't have to live in fear.
White. Christian. Male. Those three words have gotten a bad stigma in today's society. Frankly, we deserve it. We haven't been living upto what it means to be a Christian. Our choices and actions have driven the course of our history. Our voice has power, and that power has been used in a way that majorly harms the minorities.
As a Christian, I believe you should love your neighbor as yourself. You shouldn't judge, let alone treat, someone in a different way than you would want done to you. So why do we do it? I am in no way saying I don't make preconceived notions of people. We all do, for we are human. However, it is acting upon those notions by choosing to believe they are true that make it wrong.
Men. Our voice can be heard for sure. If we speak out on the wrongness that is happening in our society, people will listen. They don't have a choice. It is clear that we run the show. We can help the minority's voices be heard by the majority ear.
I charge you, white, Christian men, to take up the minorities cross. Jesus took our cross, and we didn't deserve it. Take up the minority cross and carry it so everyone can see the problem with the sexism, racism, and corruption that is alive and well in the United States. It will be scary, yes. It was scary for Jesus. We are called to live like Jesus. These acts of taking up the cross can be as little as keeping your words to yourself to partaking in a protest.
