Chapter Overview: Kappa Delta

Over the next few weeks, we will be featuring each sorority that participates in formal recruitment at the University of Alabama. This will help inform potential new members about each chapter.

Nickname: KD

National Founding: Longwood University in 1897

UA Founding: First sorority on campus in 1904

Chapter Name: Zeta

Chapter Website: ua.kappadelta.org

Kappa Delta's chapter president, Carlton Middlekauff, said a few words about the University of Alabama chapter.

“KD is a great way for potential new members to immediately get involved on campus and in the community. We promote success in all areas of our member’s lives including academics, campus and community involvement, sisterhood and so much more," Middlekauff said.

"Everyone always told me 'if you invest in KD, it will invest so much more in you.' I can speak from personal experience when I say this could not be truer. This chapter continuously impacts its member’s lives in a positive way, including my own," Middlekauff said. "I am so blessed to be apart of something so amazing.”

Kappa Delta's recruitment chair, Virginia Bullock, also said a few words about the upcoming recruitment week.

“It’s going to be a long, hot week, so drink plenty of water! The best thing you can do is be yourself during each party you go to during recruitment week," Bullock said. "On Bid Day, it’ll be all worth it!”

The 2014 pledge class also said a few words about why they decided to pledge KD.

“I pledged KD because everyone was genuine throughout recruitment. The philanthropies we support are incredible causes, and everyone in our chapter truly cares about helping each other out whether it’s with schoolwork, campus involvement, or as a new freshman on campus.

"I met two of my very best friends on Bid Day, so I knew from the beginning I made the right choice!” – Everette Dawkins, PC’14

“When I went through recruitment, I could tell how well the KDs got along, how they interacted with each other, and from that moment I knew I really wanted the friendship and joy that they had when it came to choosing a sorority.

"I immediately knew on Bid Day that I had made the best decision of my life by choosing KD! I have made so many great new friends and memories that I know will last a lifetime!” – Francie Kenan, PC’14

“I fell in love with KD the first day I went into their house during recruitment. There was so much energy, love, and happiness that filled the whole house. All of the girls were so down to earth and easy to relate to.

"KD has made me feel welcomed and has made me truly feel like a sister. I can’t imagine myself being at any other house any other group of girls!” Anna Mixon, PC’14

“I decided to go KD because I felt most comfortable when I walked in the house during recruitment. The girls were very down to earth, genuine, and this made it easy for me to be myself.

"Also, I love that KD promotes confidence in all women. I’ve made so many great new friends, memories, and KD has given me lots of awesome opportunities!” Grace Morrissette, PC’14

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
