What Changing My Hair Has Taught Me

Sometimes a new haircut isn't the only thing you leave the salon with.

I remember the moment I first sat down on a hydraulic hair styling chair. I was young and eager for change sitting in a room full of women covered in silky capes, full of gossip and listening ears. Each person in the salon entered in with a vision and desire for a makeover and left somewhat new.

Throughout the transition of new looks, hairstyles, and hair colors, I have learned so much about what a simple change of appearance can do for you.

People color their hair for several different reasons and here's why I change mine.

I left the salon for the first time confident. I walked out feeling beautiful and worthy enough to share my joy with others. I wasn't afraid of my body image, my self esteem or even what could be going on in my personal life in that very moment of time. The one thing that really mattered was that I really loved myself and how I looked. I saw more than a haircut or hair color, I saw myself happy even if it was temporary. (hopefully long term).

That's why I enjoy coloring my hair. It has taught me more than what a new look I can or cannot pull off. It has showed me that I do not have to be afraid to love myself and can be confident solely in that. I'm glad I found a place that reminds me that I can spoil myself and not be ashamed of how it makes me feel!

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
