I've Changed My Major 3 Times And That's Totally OK

I knew for a long time what I wanted to do, or so I thought.

"When I grow up, I want to be an ultrasound technician!" I said this to myself ever since I was in the eighth grade.

The closest college in Kentucky to Louisville was Saint Catherine College in Saint Catherine, Kentucky. I had prepared most of my high school years thinking that this was the path I was going to follow. Big mistake! I had heard rumors after visiting the college that it would potentially close because of the financial debt that the school was in. This was actually the only college I applied to and visited. The day after I received my financial statement, the college closed down for good. I thought my life ended but really it had only just begun.

A coworker at the daycare I was working at the summer after graduating high school told me about the college she was going to and how she loved it. It was Georgetown College. I visited the campus that summer and decided that day that it was the place for me. I declared my major as Health Sciences because I could still go to school for sonography after I got my Bachelors degree. The longer I was at the school, the more I realized it wasn't for me nor was the major. Everyone was either involved in a sport or Greek life. Since the school was so expensive I spent most of my time working just to pay my tuition.

My best friend Macey and I thought it would be good if I moved to Lexington (she was a student at the University of Kentucky at the time) with her and we got an apartment together and I would go to school at Bluegrass Community and Technical College. There I decided may I would be interested in doing Dental Hygiene because it paid well. After about two months in anatomy class, I realized I wasn't meant to be in the medical field.

I prayed for about two weeks for guidance on what to do with my life. I was at a standstill and didn't know where I was going. At some point after those two weeks, I knew I wanted to follow in my sister's footsteps and get my degree in Family Sciences. I always loved to help people no matter the age. This is when I truly decided that I wanted to go to the University of Kentucky and major in Family Sciences. I'm happier than I have ever been in my time at college. Yes, it has taken me some time to figure out what I wanted to do with my life but that's OK!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
