Once, my freshman year of college, a girl told me that her major (childhood development) was more valuable than mine, because she was going to "change the world, and you can't do that with fashion." She told me about how her major would allow her to work with small children and take mission trips to other countries to help them. The only thought that went through my head at the time was, "How dare you?" Really, I'm not here to tell her that she can't change the world, but I am here to challenge her comment and tell her that she was absolutely wrong.
300 trillion dollars from the fashion industry are accounted for in the global economy. This is approximately 2% of the entire world'sGDP. This means that, on a global scale, the fashion industry definitely matters. To be a part of that, you are contributing to the greater good of the industry. Not to mention, with an industry that large, there are millions of job opportunities provided for those who need it.
Fashion is an art. It inspires creativity in children and develops artistic skills. Fashion shows are held all over the world to bring together people from all backgrounds who have a common interest. Fashion is a way of expressing yourself that is like no other. You can have a different style every day, or you can build a style you've been working on for years.
Like many others, my personal goal in the fashion industry is to own my own business. I want to support my local community, provide clothes drives for those who need it, and build personal relationships with my customers. I want to help women from all backgrounds find a store they can come to that will give them clothes to live their most comfortable and confident life.
There is no bigger dream than that in my eyes. "Making a change in the world" is not defined in the grandiosity of the projects you are working on. Change is defined by the people you affect for the better. It is defined in the relationships you build, and the way you make people feel.
So yes, your major can change the world, but there is nothing anyone can say to convince me that mine can't either.
