For the majority of students, it’s impossible to predict their exact career plans. It’s so common to go to college with a certain major, only to change your mind down the road. You might go to college with your whole life planned out and suddenly realize that's not exactly what you want anymore.
College is a time of growth and experimentation. It is the most freedom you’ll probably ever have. It’s okay to make mistakes and change your major; not everything has to be set in stone. In fact, college is the perfect opportunity to learn in depth what truly interests you, and what field can satisfy your interests.
Even after you’ve found an ideal major and are finally content, it’s also okay to go into a career that’s completely unrelated. I feel like society puts so much pressure on individuals these days.
There are seemingly unspoken standards that after college, you must find a perfect dream job right away. You must learn to be completely dependent and kick-start a perfect career that’s related to your degree. But let’s be honest, that doesn’t always have to be the case.
It’s unrealistic to expect people to have their whole life figured out by the time they’re 22. At that age, you’re still growing as a person and have so much more to learn about yourself. Yes, many people pursue a job that somewhat corresponds to the degree they obtain in college; but if you don’t there’s nothing wrong with that.
There comes a time when it’s perfectly fine not to have everything planned out. If the perfect opportunity pops up at the right time in your life, take it. If you lose interest in what you studied in college, that’s fine! Don’t feel forced to confine yourself to a career path you’ll ultimately be unhappy with.
So many people around me have graduated, and their job is nothing remotely related to their degree. Every one of them has a successful life and career.
