Ah, spring rush is upon us. The time for perfect makeup, coordinated outfits and small talk is back. While I empty my pockets over new tops and shoes, I pray for quality girls. Since joining Greek life my sophomore year, my life has been exciting to say the least. I have developed as woman, become more confident, and found friends and sisters for life. Don’t get me wrong, the parties, socials and formals are a blast. However I can genuinely say my favorite part are the values and friends I have made.

Like all good things, there are a few bad things that come along with it. That’s why I really hope Greek recruits young women who can be the positive change Greek needs.

In the past few decades, the life of sorority women has made leaps and bounds. Sorority houses are no longer full of strictly rich white women. In my chapter, we have Blacks, Asians, plus-size women, and so much more. I take pride in the diversity. It excites me that we are so loving and accepting. Nationally, over 800,000 community service hours are earned by Greeks each year. Over $7,000,000 is raised each year from Greek life for charities. Greek life builds leaders, molds strong groups, and encourages personal growth.

However, there are things I wish could change within Greek life. It is sad that many Greek members are stuck in a high school mentality. So much pettiness. Sometimes if you aren’t skinny enough or pretty enough, you aren’t accepted by organizations. People start negatively associating letters with qualities, such as being know for having fat members, bitchy girls, lower grades, or sleeping around.

Yes, every organization holds different values, but in the end, we are all united to grow and develop into positive leaders of our communities. We are supposed to come together and serve. We should not be casting out people because of weight, ethnicity, personality, or whatever else. It is sad that as a plus size girl I have been publicly humiliated, teased, and ridiculed in front of an entire organization because of what I look like. And I wasn’t even causing any harm. I was simply hanging out and enjoying a party.

Potential new members, do not fear Greek. It is a wonderful experience full of opportunities and open doors. Embrace and enjoy it. While you do that, be the change you want to see in Greek life. Open your mind and put away any arrogance, harsh feelings, or stereotypes. Diversity is what makes the organizations stronger. I believe if we start recruiting young men and women with a positive mindset, we can truly improve Greek life.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
