Hello! For those that don't know me, or haven’t seen my work before, I am the Editor-in-Chief of Odyssey at Champlain College.
With over 1,200 communities across the nation and more than 14,000 content creators, it’s easy to miss or overlook a creator who is producing great content. As a way to help you make sure you’re not missing one of those creators right here at Champlain College, I plan to highlight someone from time to time that I think is creating exceptional stuff!
This week, that individual is Monste Guerra !
Montse has been using Odyssey to tell stories about justifying murder through rhetoric and how it feels to steal someone else's man. As one of our video creators, Montse has begun a mini-series about what it means to be an artist. Check out some of her latest articles and videos here!
Montse has been with Odyssey since September 2016. I recently asked her what she's gotten out of creating content for Odyssey:
“I was born and raised on storytelling, where magnanimity was never an option, but rather a requirement. Through countless fairytales and never-ending accounts of history, stories became a part of me. I quickly became acquainted with the desire to share stories of my own, but was never quite sure how,” she said. "One day my mother brought home 'Finding Nemo,' and I was completely awe-struck. I insisted from that day onward that my stories would need to be told in such a fantastic manner, but I could not pinpoint what made the movie different than the stories I was so accustomed to hearing.
"Fast forward a few years, and photography came into my life. I never felt completely content with what I was saying with my work, and so one day my sophomore year, I remembered 'Finding Nemo.' On a whim, I sought out to make a film myself, and it was quite possibly the worst film I have ever made — but I loved it. I realized that the combination of the aesthetic pleasure I got from photography and the nostalgic feeling that accompanied storytelling made up filmmaking, and before I knew it, my heart was completely set.
"Continuing this story-telling journey through Odyssey has gifted me with the opportunity to create content for audiences I normally would not reach, and has ultimately [created] an internal desire to share my passion for art with the world. With my mini-series, Artist, I managed to create a family of videos which do just that. Through the combination of my love of film and art, Odyssey has given me a way to articulate meaning in a way that is emotionally accessible to an audience."
