Being comfortable. We all look for it everywhere, whether it's in places, people or jobs. But when it comes to choosing your college classes you tend to stick with what you know or the requirements. We don't want to be challenged when it comes to an elective, especially when it comes to the work load. People choose classes that have a light work load, are fun and easy.
But what if you took an elective to challenge yourself or because you wanted to learn more about the subject? This semester I struggled to find a class to fill my schedule. With recently changing my major I found out I had to pick up another year of a foreign language. I had taken Spanish in high school for two years but struggled to pick it up. So I knew I needed to find another language to take. I couldn't decide on what to take, so I figured I go to the root of all languages: linguistics.
So I took the basic introduction class and after the first week of class, I realized that this class wasn't going to be an easy one for me. Linguistics is a mixture of learning a new alphabet and system, plus learning other world languages. I had failed to understand what linguistics really meant and didn't notice the work load.
I definitely won't be ending my semester of linguistics as a scholar of it. But I will end it being more appreciative of electives as it will test my ability. As I will learn so much more than I ever thought from it and grow as a student.
