The other hand writers or lefties is what people call us. Being left-handed can be so hard sometimes, we lefties only make up about 10 percent of the population. With that fact being stated it is truly hard to go somewhere that is not solely dedicated to right-handed people. Granted we only make up a small percentage of the total population but, sheesh can we make some things a little more left-handed friendly. While left-handed people are unique and cool in their own way by simply using the opposite hand, it does get challenging at times and here’s why.
Some of the reasons why it is hard being left handed is because a lot of things are not made for left handed people; for example scissors. Scissors do not make it easy for lefties to cut, it literally forces us to either cut right handed or fail to be able to cut properly at all (I honestly still cannot cut to this day). Another thing is the EDC machines in stores. The pen is 9/10 on the right side causing us to either sign right-handed or try to our best to stretch the pen over to the other side in an attempt to signing with our left hand. This most of the times is a fail or comes out like a complete chicken scratch.
Writing left handed alone is already hard enough, but writing with a pencil, pen, or marker can be the worst thing ever. You get totally shocked if there isn’t a smudge mark on your hand from writing on some paper or a white board. I personally will only use certain pens, pencils, and markers only because I know for a fact that they do not smudge. So, as a child, I was not able to get the nice cool Disney Princess pens I had to get the normal boring pens. Imagine the fun in that. Notebooks and binders can also be your worst nightmare it’s like either enjoys the pain of hitting that metal part in your notebook or binder or take extra time taking the paper in and out. I still take the extra time to take my papers in and out.
Eating with other people can be a huge challenge especially when all your friends are right handed. You often hear “stop bumping me," “ugh why are you left-handed," or “let’s switch sides”. When eating with other people you have to strategically think about where to sit in order to not cause a mess by eating with someone using the opposite hand. Also, did you ever realize that a lot of cooking tools are made for right handers? For example the old can opener, the ice cream scooper, and measuring cups. Yup, this has caused a lot of challenges in the kitchen for us as well.
No one really thinks about all the things are exclusively appointed to right-handers only until it is brought to their attention. I like to believe that that is why a lot of the time lefties can become besties because they have an instant connection that they share with each other. Being left handed makes us unique in our own way, but believe me when I say this it can also be a challenge.
