I guess when I was filling out my college applications it never really struck me how hard it must be for a kid to be away from their parents. Until now, my college was only 45 minutes away from my house, if I wanted to, I could go home at any time. But now, my college is 2500 miles from home. Sure it’s nice to say I live in California, but in all reality home is where the heart is. Even though my family left for California, my heart will always reside in Connecticut, the tiny Constitution state. But that’s not the point to address here, the point is, exactly how hard or easy could it be for someone to live 2000 miles from their parents? Especially as a college student. Here are a few disputable reasons.
1. Freedom
It’s every kids/young adult’s dream to get away from their parents. You don’t get yelled at, there’s no one complaining to you about doing good in school on a daily basis and last but not least you make your own decisions.2. Being an adult
It’s all fun and games until you realize you have to schedule your own doctor’s appointments and do your own takes. No more bringing your mom or your dad to your pediatrician…
3.Facing hardships
Since you were a kid your parents have always been there for you, for every knee scrape to every challenging class. But the distance that separates us from our parents is also the distance that separates us from our support.4. Money
Growing until a lot of us were probably 16 years old, we relied on our parents for money and they knew that. They knew that, they knew that we only got paid minimum wage or whatever and it was hard for us, so they always supported us. But living miles away from your parents, you are literally required to ball on a budget.5. Groceries
6. Bullies
Who will we go to when we have trouble with someone at work or in school?
7. Paying bills
Using electricity in your parent’s house was a luxury, what the heck did we care about how much it costed? But living on our own we will care.
8. Planning
Normally our parents would plan trips, vacations and anything else, but now if you want to visit them, its up to you to become the vacation planner you never were9. Upkeep
Here’s the best part, living on your own you can literally be the slob you’ve dreamed of being, Wear what you want and how you want10. Cleaning
11.Sleepovers
Being on your own means exactly as it sounds, you can have who you want over when you want. So to those reading this, party up.
