Christmas is a beautiful and traditional holiday all throughout Europe. Christmas markets, particularly in Germany, capture the season through their food, crafts, drink and music. Europe is an expensive trip this time of year, but how great would it be to experience the magic of the holidays in a local European market? Well, luckily, Philadelphia’s Christmas Village will momentarily transport you to the center of Nuremberg, Germany where you can enjoy the traditional holiday markets and all they have to offer.
For nearly 50 years, more than eighty vendors have gathered in Love Park in wooden booths to sell traditional European food, drinks, and holiday gifts. However, due to the renovations in the park this year, the Christmas Village has been moved to none other than the courtyard and outskirts of of City Hall. As you walk around to each booth, you will find the perfect gifts for yourself and your loved ones; hand-crafted ornaments, jewelry, décor, photography and more.
Enjoy German-style soft pretzels, Bratwurst, of course, and Austrian apple strudel. Of course, while you’re there, the hot gluhwine, a traditional mulled wine, is a must try for those of you who are over 21. Served in an iconic Christmas Village mug, feel free to refill throughout the day at a discount and take home the perfect souvenir to keep in your cupboard and use throughout the season.
With its temporarily new location, the courtyard festival is now home to a carousel. This addition is more than just an attraction for families, but is also a beautiful representation of German art. The horses are hand-carved from wood and the wreaths and decorations are also made by the artists.
The Christmas Village is open Sunday through Thursday from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm starting November 24th and ending December 24th.
