Censorship has always been a touchy subject when it comes to the arts. Whether it's in a book you read in your literature class or in a musical your drama department puts on, foul and crude language has always been looked down upon. While I personally would not advise using this choice language on a regular basis by any means, I think we need to reevaluate the topic of censorship when it comes to the use of crude language.
I believe that art is meant to trigger conversations and create controversy. Art in any form, literature or musical, is created to share an opinion with the rest of the world. That's the key here: it's an opinion which means you don't have to agree with it. That being said, you should not attack the artist for putting their opinions out in public. We, as artists, do this because we are trying to share another perspective for you to look at. More often than not, we don't care if you agree with us because we already know that there are people who automatically won't agree. But even though we know people won't always agree with us, we hope that maybe we can shed some light on a new perspective that may have been overlooked.
About the crude language. This is probably one of the most talked about topics in art, especially theater. No, I don't think we should be using foul language everyday, as it's just not necessary. When it comes to art, on the other hand, this type of language can be very beneficial in getting the raw emotion out to the audience. Sometimes using the word "shit," "damn" or "hell" helps convey the overall emotion in the piece.
If the crude language has a purpose in the art then there should be no reason to censor it. If you are dropping the "f bomb" every other line in a show or you count seven curse words every other page of a novel, then I believe that the choice of language is just being used for the sake of using the language, rather than to help propel the message the artist is trying to give.
All this being said, it is just my opinion and it is by no means right or wrong; it's just what I believe on this given topic.
