“Alec Baldwin is so disrespectful to our president! He needs to keep his nose out of politics and just act.”
The entire point of “Saturday Night Live,” quite literally since its conception, is to use humor to comment on pop culture, politics, and societal norms around us. Plus, he and Kate McKinnon were hysterical as Trump and Clinton during the entire election season and to this day, so kindly hush up.
“[Celebrity] has no background in politics. He/she shouldn’t be telling us to vote for [2016 Presidential Candidate].”
Whelp, our president never held any sort of public office before he became president. I mean, he wasn’t even on the dang PTA. What’s your point here? And speaking of experience: do YOU have any sort of political background? No? Then why are you trying to tell me who to vote for?
I’m just – honestly, I don’t even have a response to this. These four meager words speak volumes of ignorance.
These statements have come from the disgruntled mouths of voters who think celebrities need to stay away from politics and just live in their little Tinsel Town bubbles. I’m here to say no to that notion.
They may be “just” actors, athletes, and musicians; but, we are “just” students or members of the workforce. What makes us so much more politically relevant than them? Nothing! True, lots of legislation and taxes might have less effect on the rich and wealthy then it does on the blue-collar workers back home. But they’re citizens of this country just like the rest of us, and their votes count just as much as ours do.
The voting booth makes us all equal. And besides, a regular Joe trying to change voters’ minds is no more effective than talking to a wall. Celebrities have power, and politically active ones have even more so. They are the ones who use it well, no matter who they support.
There is no doubt that the rich and famous live in bubbles of platinum albums, private beach houses, and Oscars, so they don’t see this country as we do; but, they also know their voices are loud and influential. They are going to support any person or bill that they feel will better this country. We can only hope that in trying to improve our nation they’re thinking about their fans, the majority, rather than their friends, the minority.
