I see it constantly on social media. Everyone does it. They idolize the people for their acting talent, their ability to perform, and the supreme athletic ability to bring home championships. Yet we demonize the people that have all of those things while continuing to make something more of their lives than just being in the spotlight and living to entertain.
Flashback to the year 2010, more specifically, the fall. Everything is all fine and dandy. The San Francisco Giants just won the world series, and everyone's excited it isn't the hated Yankee's and the Red Sox. But another thing stands out about the year 2010. The NCAA puts out a new rule for college football players. It's dubbed "The Tebow Rule." The rule was put in place to prevent student athletes from being able to display any sort of messages on their eye paint.
Most will remember that Tim Tebow wore the bible verse "Phil 4:13" on his eye paint and it became the number one most searched term on google for the next 24 hours. Tim Tebow made amazing waves for a very short period of time and then was mocked and demonized for discussing and praising Christianity. There were rude cartoons mocking his act of "Tebowing."
Fast forward to the present day in 2018. Tim Tebow is an afterthought and often associated with Football. However, he has spent a lot of time over the course of the last eight years doing charity work and making a vast difference in the world. He spreads the word of God through love and happiness while those who despise him associate Christianity with that of the likes of an angry and judgmental demeanor.
Meanwhile we can discuss the top celebrities that have been frequently discussed and idolized this past year. Tekashi 6ix 9ine was one of the most popular people in twitter mentions. #Free6ix9ine has been one of the most tweeted hashtags of the year and it's quite appalling considering the charges this individual has had against him through the last three years.
in 2015 6ix9ine was charged with three counts of felony sexual use of a child and pleaded guilty. In 2017 he had a domestic incident with his girlfriend over the fact he was caught cheating on her and she had been questioning him on text messages she had seen from the other girl. He then has since been involved and facing life in prison for racketeering, firearm charges, as well as conspiracy to murder and armed robbery. The sad part about this entire thing, he's been rather fortunate to have been getting away with the ridiculousness thus far.
The 2015 incident he was able to get his plea bargain and was only sentenced to three years of probation if he refrain from violating the terms of his probation. (including a clause that forced him to obtain his GED) He has since failed the exam to get his GED since the sentencing. The funniest aspect about this whole thing, he took the test while he was on Instagram Live and had asked people viewing it for answers...and still failed. Now, I am not a person that would make fun of individuals for lack of intelligence or intellect, but I would be so drastically embarrassed if I were in that situation. He did eventually pass the GED on his final attempt granted by the judge on the last day before his sentence hearing.
So help me God, if someone says that he's "done so much philanthropic work," I will put my head in my hands and pray for the future of our nation as we must be disappointing our ancestors with ignorance. He was ordered to do 1,000 hours of community service. It's not philanthropic work when it's court ordered. It's punishment for breaking the law.
So instead of looking up to people who genuinely want to do good by the world, we want to post a reactive response to someone for committing a crime simply because "they make good music." Sure, Tim Tebow wasn't the best football player out there. But he did so many admirable things on the field. The way he competed, the way he carried himself, the way he refused to lose at all costs, and the way he was never willing to give up on what he wanted. But let's move onto something else, because Tim is easy example.
Let's talk about Ashton Kutcher. Most know him from the hit TV series "That 70's Show" and the multitude of different movies he's done over the years. But have you noticed that he simply hasn't had a large output of movies or TV show appearances as of late? It's because he's doing his part to break up sex trafficking rings. Thorn; the company that Kutcher founded along with Demi Moore, was able to report in 2017 they had identified 5,791 children, 18,119 individuals in all that had been victims of sex trafficking and they were able to successfully rescue 103 children while using Spotlight, their data analyzing program.
However, on the contrary of this article, I believe that there are simply just more things going on around the world than what celebrity has done what. People just need to see past what common pop culture is being pushed by the media. It's more appealing to most people if you actually know what else is going on around the world that isn't getting such drastic buzz as who cheated on Cardi, Nikki, or Beyonce.
I understand that most of these people that idolize 6ix 9ine and other poor examples of individuals are in their early 20's. But these are also the people protesting against the things that 6ix 9ine has done. They want justice for rape victims. They want justice for people who make dishonest business dealings. They want people who abuse women to be behind bars. But what does all that matter if you're going to boldly support someone who commits crimes involving all of those negative actions? That displays one of two things. They're more than willing to put blinders on for all the wrong reasons, or they just simply do not care about their social justice projects. I do not know which is worse.
