Celebrity obsessions have been a thing since MTV only played music videos, and they have only been heightened by the creation of Twitter, Instagram, and other various media outlets. Today’s most popular fan bases include “Directioners” (One Direction fans), “Beliebers” (Justin Bieber fans), and “Swifties” (Taylor Swift fans). Some might think that there are better ways to spend one’s time than fantasizing about the day they finally get to meet and even befriend (or sleep with) their favorite celebrity, but I beg to differ. There is an abundance of reasons why being obsessed with a celebrity can be a good thing, and I’ve decided to list five of them.

1. It’s a good distraction from the real world.

If you’re having a rough day because you failed an exam, you’re having relationship problems, or simply because the weather is shitty, your favorite celebrity is always there to obsess over and take your mind off of things.

2. The person you’re obsessed with can be your imaginary girlfriend/boyfriend, and that can be so much better than a real one.

One of my favorite celebrities happens to be Indiana Pacers small forward Paul George, and I often find myself fantasizing about what our relationship would be like. Paul never hurts me and we never fight – he’s the perfect imaginary boyfriend.

3. Making friends based off of your mutual love for the same person becomes a bit of a hobby.

It’s so easy to use your obsession with a celebrity as the perfect conversation starter with a new person who happens to love them just as much as you do. Talking about the music, films, or stats of someone with another person can be so fulfilling, especially when your other friends don’t understand your obsession.

4. The better the person you’re obsessed with is, the more likely they’ll inspire you to be better at everything.

Celebrities are a variety of things – charitable, hilarious, absolutely crazy. Whatever floats your boat, these people can influence who you are. And the better they are at their job, the more likely they’ll make you want to be better at your own.

5. At the end of the day, your favorite celebrity makes you happy!

And that’s really all that matters. So next time a hater makes you feel anything less than awesome for loving a celebrity a little more than the average person, show this list to them.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.
