Back in my day, I did have a mild obsession with the Jonas Brothers and Hilary Duff, but I never understood the all-in obsessions that every other fan had that I couldn’t seem to reach. Now-a-days everyone seems to be so intrigued with anyone famous and anything having to do with fame. I’m sure they are great people and there is nothing wrong with being a fan, but I do have a problem with constantly using time out of your own day to watch someone else’s life. What these stars don’t tell you is they struggle with life just as much as you do.
In the Player’s Tribune a couple weeks ago, Kevin Love wrote an article about the current state of his mental health. After having a panic attack at halftime of a game, he realized that mental health needed to be talked about more, especially with men and boys. After he felt better, two days later he was back to playing like his normal self. He then realized that he was relieved that no one really knew why he had left that earlier game. “Why was I so concerned with people finding out?” Kevin wrote.
It’s situations like this that stand out to me. We put Kevin Love up on a pedestal because of how talented and famous he is. What we don’t take into consideration is he struggles with things just like a normal human being does. Never do we stop and think that these people we want our lives to be like, normally don’t have it all together either. Regardless of what the media says.
Anyone who knows me knows that I am obsessed with the show “Friends” and everything about it. This is as close to being obsessed with movie stars as I’ve ever got. I was shocked, though, to be doing some research the other day to find that Matthew Perry, or the hilarious “Chandler Bing” struggled with pill addition and alcoholism. In the article I read, he even said “I was in the white-hot flame of fame. The six of us were just everywhere all the time. From an outsider’s perspective, it would seem like I had it all.”
As obsessed as I am with this show, I never realized that a glamorous star from it, struggled with his own issues. We all have a story and we almost discredit all these famous stars for their strength by assuming they are all perfect and they’re living the life. Hard fought battles have been won in a lot of these people’s lives, it hasn’t always been a cakewalk.
Like I said, there is nothing wrong with being a fan. Just make sure you step back periodically to realize that these people are not robots, they are human beings too. None of us are perfect and we must realize that the media can make something look completely different than it actually it. Just because they’re in the spotlight, doesn’t mean they need to be idolized like they aren’t normal too.
