Happy Mother's Day

Unconditional moms love so hard it almost hurts them.

With Mother's Day this past weekend, I feel it is appropriate to write an article about how badass my mom is. I have been privileged enough to have an unconditional mother. Unconditional moms love so hard it almost hurts them.

I have always felt capable, supported, and cherished because of the foundation my mother built. With her resilience and love, she has always believed in my abilities. But with Mother’s Day, comes anxiety. What do I gift the woman that has given me everything? It’s a tricky territory. However, with brainstorming and subtle questioning, I have been able to compile great Mother’s Day gifts on a budget (we are college students, and financial aid has probably run out by now).

A card.

Whether you are 8 years old, or 22 years old, I believe there is a certain sentiment that hand-written notes carry that a materialistic item may not. Yes, my mother is a HUGE fan of diamonds, hoop earrings, and Lancôme foundation, but I know cards are her weakness. Cards are inherently personal and have sentimental value because of the time consummation.

Etsy is your best friend.

Etsy is a hub for personalization and style. Most Etsy products are usually handmade providing intricate detail and designs. Whether it is a coffee mug with her name on it or a keychain, Etsy is a creative way of navigating gift giving.

A photo album.

Nothing warms the nostalgic heart more than old photographs where you can reminisce about childhood moments with your mother. A photo album is cost efficient and effective as it can be kept and shared for many years. Moreover, adding a bag of their favorite candy can add a perfect touch.

If you have responsibly saved money, I would recommend searching through her belongings when she is not home.

I am not talking about her purse or drawers but search the visible items on her dresser. Is your mother low on their favorite fragrance? See what favorite item she is running low on.

Although these examples are from my own personal relationship with my mother and her preferences, I hope it can get your creativity started. If you cannot afford a gift for Mother's Day, it is still possible to make this day special. Gifts are, after all, only material. However, you can gift sentiment and love. On Mother's Day, I hope to honor the mothers who make their children feel capable and safe and to honor the Mother's who cannot join us this year.

If you may have a strained relationship with your mother or do not have a biological mother, I would utilize the day to reflect on the influential people in your life. Like most holidays, it should be a day to recognize the goodness in others.

To the dog moms and cat moms, a Happy Mother's Day to you. Thank you for loving your furry pals. Dog and cat moms still deserve to be celebrated. And lastly, to my mother Shirley, I hope I can explain the immense gratitude I have towards you. Without my mother, I would be nothing.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
