I am one of the lucky ones. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a home where being gay was no big deal. I always knew that some people were gay, and some were straight - this wasn't hard for me to understand as a little girl. Which is why when I saw a booth celebrating National Coming Out Day 2016 on my campus, I felt proud to be an FSU student. The booth served to celebrate our growing freedom to express love in the way it means to you.
Although I am straight, National Coming Out Day reminded me to appreciate the love I have. Whether it's from family, friends, or my significant other. Most importantly, this day also reminds me to love myself - just like so many other people from the LGBTQ community are doing by coming out.
For millennials under high stress and pressure to be somebody in society, it's very easy to lose yourself and forget who you are. But as corny as it sounds, love will help keep you grounded. If you stopped to think of how much someone really cares about you, you'd be humbled. So remember to also show them how you feel. Even if your loved one is your dog or your cat, you always have a reason to show love and kindness.
