Earth Day is arguably one of the best holidays. We celebrate the earth and all it does for us. My past Earth Days have been spent participating in beach cleanups and going on nature walks. Since we're currently in a nationwide quarantine, you may think it's a little more difficult to show your appreciation for the earth. Never fear! Here are five ways to keep the earth happy without leaving your house (or yard)!
1. Donate To A Charity
There are many charities that use fundraising to help clean up the earth and repair it from the damage humans have done to it. These charities can also include animal conservations and eco-fashion companies. Since you can't physically leave the house to participate in any cleanups or fundraisers, donation is the next best thing. My personal favorites to look into are the World Wildlife Fund and 4Ocean. Anything helps!
2. Plant Some Seeds
This may be a little bit easier said than done, especially if you don't already have seeds lying around. But it's a great way to be a little greener and appreciate the earth a bit more! Plant a few seeds in a pot and sit it on your windowsill. Succulents are a great option if you're looking for a low-maintenance plant. If you're on a budget, the dollar section at Target is usually chock full of the tiny grow-your-own plant pots.
3. Paint A Picture
Painting nature scenery is one of my favorite ways to celebrate the planet and its beauty. Even though we aren't all artists, it's a great way to pass the time and to appreciate each tiny detail in the landscape you're painting. Pull up a picture of a cool waterfall or mountain and just start painting! You also have the option to follow along with a Bob Ross tutorial, since he seems to enjoy nature as well. If you don't have paint, no worries-- draw it instead!
4. Watch A Nature Documentary
Nature documentaries are beautiful, entertaining, and educational. I never get bored watching them because I get so invested in the animals. A great way to appreciate our planet is to appreciate its creatures. There are tons of nature documentaries available on YouTube and streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney Plus. Pick your favorite animal or ecosystem and use your free time to learn about them and understand their significance. Personally, I recommend Netflix's "Mission Blue" and "Chasing Coral".
5. Appreciate Your Backyard
Go outside and appreciate your little square of land! While we're cooped up inside the house all day, we can find ourselves longing for a glimpse of nature. The good news is, most of us have a yard! Go outside for at least 15 minutes and sit in the sun. This will give your body some much-needed vitamin D and might even give you a new perspective on the importance of your backyard. It's best to go out early in the morning or just before nightfall since the air is a bit cooler. The one thing I don't miss right now is the Florida midday heat!
